Firstly with my supervisor (KM), a very full tutorial session with lots of feedback on my Participant documents. These required small adjustments to make them less formal. The surveys required one question to be changed from a yes/no answer to a Lickert scale choice. These changes I have now carried out.
Then having read up on how to transcribe, I felt prepared to conduct my first interview as a student researcher. I went along with: a primary transcription device (Macbook) and typist; my trusty Plextalk Linio recorder and my amended questions. This observation was of a director (JA) of adult choir at work in a routine rehearsal at their usual venue. These mature voices made a good sound, a credit to JA's leadership. The four works sung were of various styles. I observed JA using warm ups, directing from the piano and giving reminders to the choir about clear diction/pronunciation and rhythm. The latter was especially important in the Spiritual and the Popular works where there was syncopation. I conducted a short interview with JA post rehearsal.
I have transcribed the interview and sent to JA to ensure she is happy with the accuracy of the content.
Having the recording as well as notes made at the time helped speed up the transcription process a little.
Actions for week ahead:
- Keep memoing as I read and write
- Review recording of choir session and make notes
- Sibelius parts file for My Bonnie Lass
- Stay on top of all parts for both songs
- Develop the round with different melody lines for imitative counterpoint warm up
