Last semester KM suggested I listen to a documentary film called Room 237. I did this but found it rather unfathomable at the time. The idea was to think about how there can be many, many different approaches or interpretations of something. In this case, what a sample of people's interpretation were of a Stanley Kubrick film, The Shining. Some were thoughtful and many were truly bizarre. At the time I didn't blog about it as it hadn't completely made sense to me. Today I listened to Same Tune, Different Song, with Debbie Wiseman (one of my favourite living composers), and lyricists Don Black and Gary Osborne. Debbie had composed a tune and asked the two men to create a lyric for it independent of each other. They both attached a love theme to it but in very different stories, one happy, the other sad. This made me recall the original listening task KM had set. I found this programme represented this very much more clearly for me as well as illuminating the songsmiths' craft! Well worth a listen. In relation to my project different interpretations are highly relevant. I am looking the participants personal reception of the selected madrigals.
