Plan 1St Session with choir (1.5 hrs)
Physical and vocal warm up exercises. (10min)
Physical: Shoulder rolls, arm stretches, toe touching with bending knees (optional).
Vocal: Ascending scale to ‘A’, arpeggios from G to C major ascending again to ‘A’.
April is in my mistress’ face – Madrigal Proper
- Hand out the scores.
- Play the song instrumentally on the piano to give them an idea of the whole thing
- Demonstrate singing through the melodic line of each voice part.
- Parts teaching: Sopranos, Alto, Tenor and Bass.
- Section teaching: S+A, T+B, SATB, small chunks or sections (A,B)
A straightforward section to ease them in – A. Then, into the more difficult section - B.
Rehearse all parts with minimal support from the piano in order to reinforce note memorisation and encourage listening to each other and the relationship of the parts, rather than the piano.
- Hand out the first survey for completion. (10 min)
On the night – 9 members were in attendance. 3 Sopranos; 3 Altos; 2 Tenors; 1 Bass.
It was checked that all present had received and read the information sheet and consent form sent previously. Consent forms were signed and collected.
I strayed from the plan a bit as I have not lead a choir for a while and I was bit nervous. I forgot to do the physical warm ups and went straight to the vocal. Although one part of this involved a song with physical movement included.
The madrigal proper – working through each voice part separately in 3-4 bar chunks the melody was taught from start to finish S A T B. This was also not entirely to plan and it would have perhaps been better to stick to the intended delivery of the A section then putting all parts together, then the B section. The instruction took up 70 minutes leaving only 5 mins for those who had to leave promptly to complete the survey. Teaching all voices the A section first would have allowed for this half to be secured in the time available and the survey to be given earlier.
The choir were consulted on their availability for the 2nd session. It was agreed that this would take place on the 30th of March.
